HKUST Research Portal

Dr. Zhiwen Hu is a scholar, educator, and interdisciplinary researcher whose work bridges comparative literature, science fiction, posthumanism, and critical studies of technology and artificial intelligence. His research explores how literary and cultural imaginaries respond to changing conceptions of the human in an increasingly technological world, with particular attention to Chinese and global speculative fiction. Drawing on comparative and cross-cultural approaches, his work brings Chinese intellectual traditions—including Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism—into conversation with contemporary debates on posthumanism, artificial intelligence, nonhuman agency, and creativity. His broader research interests include comparative science fiction, Chinese/Sinophone literature, Global Anglophone literature, Afrofuturism, environmental humanities, and the cultural history of science and technology.

Dr. Hu holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies from the University of Georgia, where his doctoral research examined posthuman creativity and human–nonhuman co-creation in science fiction and related cultural forms. He previously served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Chinese at Colgate University, teaching courses in Chinese language, literature, film, and civilization. He currently serves as Lecturer II at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he teaches literature, culture, and interdisciplinary humanities courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His current research and teaching explore Chinese and global futures through comparative perspectives, with particular emphasis on speculative fiction, artificial intelligence, technological imaginaries, and the evolving relationships among humans, machines, and other forms of creative agency.
