Professor Kao graduated from Tunghai University, Taiwan. He received his MA degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught at Yale University and the University of Alberta before joining the HKUST in 1995. He retired in 2006 and passed away in 2011.
