A new book published by Dr Freestone
Dr. Freestone’s short book Discourse and Queer Sinophone Male Identities: A Western Immigrant Perspective (Cambridge University Press) has been published as an ebook and will be published in print later this year. By analysing how queer and ethnically Chinese-identified individuals navigate ideological influences, the book investigates some of the complexities of culture and identity, and their dependence on semiotics and situated communication. Thus, queer lives in these contexts are described not only in terms of broad influences like 'Chinese culture' or 'Western ideology', but also in terms of the ongoing communicative processes through which individuals orient themselves to diverse structural influences. Through this qualified deconstructionist approach to identity, the book sheds novel light on the ideological complexity that tends to underlie people’s performance of 'who they are', challenging the simplistic and divisive cultural dichotomies that saturate daily life in greater China, and which feature prominently in academic literature. The ebook is free to download until 28th November.
