TALK: Unlocking Historical Narratives: A Visual Analytics Approach in Digital Humanities
2:00pm~3:30pm
Via Zoom

Visual Analytics (VA) has become a key tool in advancing the field of Digital Humanities (DH), facilitating effective analysis within large historical databases. It utilizes computational techniques to detect expected data patterns while employing visualizations to explore unexpected insights.
This talk introduces how VA supports data-driven discoveries in DH. We will explore digitized biographies of historical figures through an interactive visual analytic approach, unveiling social structures and hidden narratives from a cohort perspective. Moreover, we will extend the historical lens from individuals to cultural artifacts, which captures the multifaceted historical contexts of their era. By analyzing the traces of ownership of traditional Chinese handscrolls, we transcend these static collectibles into vibrant pieces of history. Lastly, we leverage the long-standing tradition of painting analysis, especially through frameworks like the “Six Principles of Paintings” from the 6th century, to organize modern computational approaches for these cultural artifacts. We highlight the challenges and opportunities for both appreciating and renovating cultural heritages.
